Youth Protection Class

posted Apr 26, 2012, 7:41 PM by Troop814 Webmaster

Troop 814 Adult Leaders on Monday April 30, 2012 you will have the opportunity to attend a required training class for Youth Protection.  By State Law it is now required that this training class be taken at a class room environment.  Online training for Youth Protection will no longer be accepted.
If any Adult Leader is going on the High Adventure or going to Bear Creek, you must have this training.  Please review email excerpt from Ted Borcherding.

 From Ted Borcherding

Sr. District Executive Victory District

Dear Scout Leaders;

On Monday, April 30 Victory District will host 3 different opportunities to take the new state of Texas youth protection classes.

Yes that is right! 3 classes, 3 different locations 3 different start times

This has all been made possible thanks to the generosity of Packs 152 and 903, along with the flexibility of our training team.

Location 1 – Pack 152 Wanke Elementary Cafeteria, 6:45pm, Covered by Carla Byrd

Location 2 – Pack 903, Beard Elementary Cafeteria, 7;45pm, Covered by Ron Parks (request RSVP)

Location 3 – Hope Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, 7pm, covered by Joe Segovia

All three locations will be teaching the exact same class and will have training cards on site. All Scout leaders and parent that plan to attend any BSA Day Camp or Boy Scout Summer Camp must take this training. This is a new state law. This training is good for two years and covers both all BSA requirements and the new state law.

Best Fish Fry Yet

posted Apr 26, 2012, 7:23 PM by Troop814 Webmaster   [ updated Apr 26, 2012, 7:43 PM ]

A Very Successful Fish Fry
This year’s Fish Fry held during the Lenten season before Easter was a big success.  It was reported by Mr. T. Orta, Troop Treasurer, that the Troop made a profit of over $1100.  This money will be going into the Troop’s general funds which will be used to help offset the cost of Troop activities for the Scouts.
Not only did the Troop make a profit.  All the Scouts that volunteered for the Fish Fry were rewarded with Scout Bucks and credit for service hours.  As you know the Scout Bucks can be used in May to help bid on equipment that will be auction to the patrols.  Last year, Scouts combined their Scout Bucks to obtain stoves and cast iron Dutch ovens which were auctioned for their patrols.
The success of the Fish Fry could not have been accomplished without the help of all the Scouts and adults that volunteered to help out on Friday evenings.  So a special “Great Job” to all who helped.

Merit Badge University 2012

Alamo Area Council Spring 2012
Merit Badge University
This year’s Merit Badge University (MBU) will be held Saturday, May 19, 2012 from 8:00am to 4:30pm.  As in previous years the location for this event will be at Northwest Vista College.  The cost per Scout to attend MBU is $12.  This can be paid to the Troop’s Treasurer Mr. T. Orta prior to May 5th before attending MBU.
Mr. E. Barrera will be the Troop’s contact person.  Any questions related to MBU can be referred to him via email at

With a variety of merit badges being offered any Scout has the opportunity to earn 1 or more depending on the Scout’s ability and desire.   There will also be Scout Leader training opportunities for adult Scouters (free of charge).

A list of merit badges and any associated pre-requisites can be viewed at the Merit Badge University website.  As in previous years any pre-requisite required for a merit badge must be completed by the Scout prior to MBU to obtain the merit badge.  If pre-requisites for a merit badge are not completed before MBU the Scout will receive an incomplete and will not be awarded the merit badge until the pre-requisites are completed.

To sign up for any merit badge the Scout must register online at the Merit Badge University website.  No schedule changes will be allowed after May 11th.  The Troop’s Librarian, Matthew V., has several merit badge pamphlets that have the requirements and information needed to complete a particular merit badge.  These pamphlets maybe be checked out by any Troop Scout. We might not have all the pamphlets for the ones being offered at MBU but I’m sure we have a few and its first come first server. Also at , merit badge worksheets that can be downloaded. These worksheets have the requirements plus space for organizing your notes and pre-requisites for the class. These worksheets however should not replace the need for the actual merit badge pamphlets which can be bought at the Alamo Area Council Scout shop or borrowed from our Librarian.

Change in May's Meeting

posted May 3, 2011, 6:17 AM by Gil Garza   [ updated May 3, 2011, 6:21 AM ]

For clarification....the Saturday, May 7, 2011 at 1:30pm in the St. Anthony Hall,  troop meeting is in lieu of the Friday, May 6, 2011, scheduled troop meeting.  We were unable to get any meeting site on Friday evening so we were forced to move the meeting to Saturday afternoon.  Again, this is not a Court of Honor, it is our regular monthly troop meeting.
